I am unique in the investment management world because I still follow individual stocks and use them in combination with low-cost ETFs to build prudently-diversified, yet potently-concentrated, goal-focused, long-term investment portfolios designed to also take advantage of applicable tax laws and account structures as well as estate planning considerations.

Whereas most investment and wealth management organizations are built on either conflicted legacy incentive structures (that favor their business over you), or they have completely given up on individual stocks (because they don’t have the competencies, plus it interferes with their sales reps’ goals).

I formed my business (Herrick Lake) as an independent fiduciary from day one; this is the highest legal standard in the investments industry, and it means I am legally obligated to put client interests first (you’d be surprised how many people are not); it permeates my thinking and everything I do as an investment pro.

My Background:

I am a former institutional investment manager, previously managing multiple multibillion-dollar equity funds (stocks) for a pension and working as an associate portfolio manager on the active equities (stock picking) team of a large bank in Chicago. I went into business for myself to ditch the corporate conflicts so I was free to do things the right way. And that is exactly what I enjoy and aspire to every day as a fiercely independent investment manager and writer of The Income Compass.

I hold an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a BS in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I live in beautiful Naperville, Illinois, USA, and I look forward to connecting with you soon.
